Description

This gadget is used to apply a rotation force to an object, around a specific axis.  It uses a gizmo handle to choose the direction of rotation. The speed and effectiveness of rotation are handled through various tweaks and the rotator can also act to inhibit rotation in other directions.

Example Tutorial (adapted from Media Molecule)

  1. Stamp a cube
  2. Snap two rotators and a controller sensor to it
  3. Tweak rotator 1 and set rotation speed to -180, rotator 2 should be left at the default of 180
  4. Tweak the controller sensor and set it to remote controllable
  5. Connect the output of left d-pad to the power port of rotator 1 and the the right d-pad to the power port of rotator 2
  6. Hit start time and press the d-pad buttons to rotate the shape

  2. Rotation Speed 
    Use this to specify the target rotation speed in degrees per second. A negative value will set the rotation direction in reverse. The onscreen gizmo indicates the currently selected speed and direction of rotation.
  3. Rotation Strength
    Set this to determine the effectiveness with which the rotator turns the target object. A low strength will accelerate slowly towards the target speed whereas a high strength will jump to the target speed much more quickly.
  4. Overall Damping
    This setting determines how much resistance the rotator has to being turned overall. A higher level of damping makes a spinning object come to rest much more quickly when the rotating forces are stopped.
  5. Local Space
    By default, the gadget uses the global x, y and z axes shared with other objects in the scene. Activate this setting to force the gadget to use the target object’s own axes instead, so that its behaviour is relative to the object rather than the scene.

Each of the tweaks on this page relates to the strength of rotational damping, separated out by axis. Whether the damping uses the global or local axes depends on the Local Space setting on page 1 of the tweak menu.

    Select the strength of rotational damping around the z axis.

    Select the strength of rotational damping relative to the gadget’s own target axis.

    By default, the rotator gadget will directly affect any object that it is snapped onto. Instead of snapping it down, you can connect one or more wires from this output to any number of elements in your scene and each one will be affected by this rotator.
  3. Direction of Rotation
    This provides an output from which the gadget’s current direction of rotation can be read (as a fat wire) and probably even modified directly.
  4. Power
    This is where you turn the gadget on/off
